So All May Eat...

There's no cash register at SAME cafe in Denver. And there are no prices for dishes like pear and Gorgonzola pizza and butternut squash soup. Diners pay what they like. If they're broke, they can do kitchen chores for their lunch. Those with cash are urged to donate it. The nine table eatery is run by Brad and Libby Birky, and IT professional and a schoolteacher respectively. Before opening the all-volunteer place, the Birkys spent time at Salt Lake City's One World Cafe, a similar enterprise run by Denise Cerreta. In fall 2006, SAME - So All May Eat - Cafe was born. So far, it's been drawing office workers, local residents and homeless people. "People love the concept of coming in and sharing," says Libby Birky, "not just the food but their whole life and lifestyle."
