WWII Sand Animation

My mother sent me this one ...

This incredible “sand animation” is performed by the 2009 winner of the Ukraine “Got Talent” television series, Kseniya Simonova.

Apparently, it is telling the story of life during WWII, which would explain the emotional reactions of some of the audience. The text at the end where they’re staring at the sailor’s ghost says: “You are always nearby”.The 24-yr-old atist’s prize was 1,000,000 Ukrainian hryvnia (April 2009, approximately US $125,000)

What she depicts is love and war, set amidst the turmoil of The Great Patriotic War, or as we call it in America, WWII. Ukraine was probably the area most devastated in the war, even more than Germany. It was a conflict that saw nearly one in four Ukrainians killed. Ukraine represented almost 20 percent of all the casualities suffered during WWII. The scene ends in 1945, with the death of Hitler and the end of a long war.

Hit up the beach in NYC

ENDLESS SUMMER

A new art show that's like a trip to the beach, without the sand in your shoes.

Group art shows are a bit like spending a day at the ocean, since with both you see a real mix of pieces.

Which, in the case of Beach Blanket Bingo, is a good thing. The new exhibit at New York City’s Jonathan LeVine Gallery is a pastiche of styles, all inspired by the warm weather. From the artists, who range from the Phoenix-born Korin Faught to the Italian Nicola Verlato, to the pieces, which go from the origami wall mounts by AJ Fosik to the Alice in Wonderland-inspired chandeliers by Adam Wallacavage, there’s something for everyone.

While there won’t be any lifeguard sightings or shouldn’t-be-nude sunbathers at the gallery, which runs through August 22, there are several pieces that will get your heart going; among our favorites are the dirty hipster portraits by Natalia Fabia, the sweet retro-girl paintings by Korin Faught, and the in-your-face graphic illustrations by street artist Cleon Peterson.

And though we expect the group show—one of the few taking place while the rest of Chelsea takes a vacation at the end of the summer—to be packed, checking it out might just might have you working up enough of a sweat to inspire an actual trip to the beach. Or, at the very least, to get you pulling out those oil paints again.
