Buy organic produce when you can — it's pricier, but you get more bang for your buck, says Kathleen Merrigan, PhD, assistant professor of nutrition at Tufts University. And that's not counting the benefits that come from reducing the amount of pesticides that enter the groundwater — and your body. "You'll really do your health good if you splurge on organic as much as possible in the produce aisle," she says. If you have to be selective, she adds, pick organic versions of the fruits and vegetables that tend to have the highest pesticide residues. Government lab tests show that even after washing, certain fruits and vegetables carry much higher levels of pesticides than do others. Between 2000 and 2005, the not-for-profit Environmental Working Group (EWG) analyzed the results of nearly 51,000 tests for residues on produce. Based on the data, they created a "dirty dozen" list of the most contaminated fruits and veggies. Top offenders include: peaches, apples, bell peppers, celery, nectarines, strawberries, cherries, pears, grapes (imported), spinach, lettuce, and potatoes. Always buying these foods organic is ideal, but if you can't, focus on those you eat all the time.)

If you witness someone collapsing, experts have long advised full-throttle CPR — chest compressions plus "rescue breaths." But last March, the American Heart Association announced a dramatic change: no more mouth-to-mouth for adults, because three studies have shown that chest compressions alone save just as many lives. Two-thirds of witnesses don't come to the aid of someone in need, often because they're worried they'll do CPR incorrectly, says Michael Sayre, MD, the lead author of the recent AHA advisory. "We hope this gets more people to act, because a victim who gets any kind of CPR more than doubles his chance of recovery," Sayre says.
Save A Life
If you see an adult collapse, call 911, then use both hands to push hard and fast (to the beat of the Bee Gees' "Stayin' Alive"). Traditional CPR is best if you come upon an adult who's already unconscious, if the victim is a child, or in cases of drowning.

My Favorite Christmas Movies

BRRR! It was cold in LA today. 48 degrees leaving work! Now I'm totally in the Christmas spirit, ready to watch some Christmas movies.

My FAVORITES:
1. Christmas Vacation
Clark Griswold. This movie is a dynasty. The entire movie makes me laugh out loud. The awkward mall scene. Clark's evil boss canceling the Christmas bonuses, leading to Clark's psychotic rampage. Aunt Bethany saying grace, aka The Pledge of Allegiance. The squirrel. Uncle Louis burning down the tree. O the tree, the glorious tree that fits so nicely on top of the family station wagon. Sadly, I think my family only has a VHS of this beloved movie. Time to upgrade to DVD.

Clark: Where do you think you're going? Nobody's leaving. Nobody's walking out on this fun, old-fashioned family Christmas. No, no. We're all in this together. This is a full-blown, four-alarm holiday emergency here. We're gonna press on, and we're gonna have the hap, hap, happiest Christmas since Bing Crosby tap-danced with Danny ******* Kaye. And when Santa squeezes his fat white *** down that chimney tonight, he's gonna find the jolliest bunch of ******** this side of the nuthouse.

2. Home Alone
If you don't like this movie, I don't like you. No, seriously. The original Home Alone (not the sequels) is an all time classic in my eyes. Did You Know: The concept for this movie originated during the filming of a scene in Uncle Buck (1989) in which Macaulay Culkin plays a character who interrogates a would-be-babysitter through a letterbox. Although the part was written especially for Macaulay Culkin by John Hughes, several hundred other boys were auditioned by director Chris Columbus just because he wanted to confirm that Culkin was right for the part. The role of Uncle Frank was written for Kelsey Grammer. Robert De Niro turned down the role of Harry, which was played in the film by Joe Pesci.

3. Love Actually
Call me a girl, but I love this movie. Charming & Cozy .... Bill Nighy. Hugh Grant. Colin Firth. Liam Neeson. Alan Rickman. Laura Linney


4. Miracle on 34th Street
Definitive proof that Santa really does exist.

5. The Santa Clause
Features one of Tim Allen's few successful big screen performances. So full of heart and charm it's becoming a holiday season staple.

6. The Holiday
Hans Zimmer creates an enchanting music score for this film. Cameron Diaz has an amazing wardrobe. Jude Law is charming as ever. I actually grew to like Jack Black after he puts on the charm in this movie. And Kate Winselt is endearing as always.

And there you go. I might be the only person who's not a fan of A Christmas Story, but I cannot stand that movie. That narrator is so annoying. The movie is boring. Buy the kid the bb gun already.

Handmade mechanical dragonfly

Etsy seller JesseDanger's $15,000 "Anax Imperator Machina" is a hand-made, precision clockwork dragonfly whose wings flap -- made from gold and silver.

Modeled after the largest modern species of dragonfly, this is a functioning creation whose wings flutter up and down when the very tip of the tail (really the abdomen, but tail sounds cooler) is turned. The inspiration for this complex mechanical insect originated from many of the fantasized gadgets of Leonardo da Vinci and other mechanical creations once thought futuristic in times long before our own. Inspired by these designs I set out to recreate nature using classical engineering and an elegant form. My intentions are to develop and continue making more of these mechanical insects.

The internal mechanisms, gears and moving parts were painstakingly hand-milled and hand-calibrated with absolute precision from 14k gold. The body, mechanical frame and wings were handcrafted from Argentium Silver, far superior to Sterling or fine silver. The body opens up to reveal the intricate inner movements, and fine details that just could not be left forever covered up! The eyes are each large 10 carat Swiss Blue Topaz cabochons and the 14k gold bezel on the tail contains a 4mm Amethyst bullet shaped cabochon.

BookCrossing.com offers a way to recycle/share books. By registering your book through the BookCrossing website you can track the "adventures" your book takes. Leave your book on a park bench, coffee shop, hotel, or anywhere someone might find it. Then log on to track it as it globally passes from person to person. Each book has a unique ID number so future readers can log on and see where the book has been. You can even leave comments about what you thought of the book.

Lately I've been contemplating ways to purge my bookshelf and this seems like a great way to pass on good reads in an eco friendly manner.
