News regarding SIDS

My dad brought my attention to an Associated Press article summarizing the publication of a study conducted by the Kaiser Permanente Division of Research in California regarding sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). SIDS has been a mystery for years and has been the leading cause of death in infants ages 1 month to 1 year.
"SIDS is the sudden death of an otherwise healthy infant that can't be attributed to any other cause."
Growing up we heard controversial advice regarding how infants should sleep, should they be placed on their backs? sides? stomachs? But in recent years it has been confirmed that infants should be placed on their backs to sleep, on a firm mattress, absent of toys and pillows.
"Some infants may have brain abnormalities that prevent them from gasping and waking when they don't get enough oxygen."
This study has found that placing a fan in an infant's room to aid in room ventilation reduces the risk of sudden infant death syndrome by 72 percent.
Please pass this information on to anyone you know with infants.
